after graduating, meier traveled to Israel and throughout  to network with other architects. In new york city, meier worked for skidmore, owings and moore briefly in 1959, (harry bates had worked there two years prior) he then worked for three years with marcel bauer, prior to starting his own practice in 1963.

“one of the earliest built works of richard meier, the saltzman house in east hampton, completed in 1969, is one of several meier-designed residences that exhibits his signature style: absolute whiteness, geometric composition, and the prominence of light.

in 1972, he was identified as one of the new york five,  a group of modernist architects: meier, peter eisenman,Michael graves Charles gwathmey and john hedjuk. influenced by architecture of the early to mid-20th century and  especially that of le corbusier, meier is considered to have built more using corbusier's ideas than anyone, including le corbusier himself. “
