Hamptons 20th Century Modern Home Tour 2023 in partnership w/ HC&G (Hamptons Cottages &Gardens)

Get ready to experience some of the most stunning modern homes of the 20th century, right here in the Hamptons! Join us along with HC&G on Sun Aug 13, 2023 at 10:00:00 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time) for an unforgettable tour of the area's iconic modernist properties.

The day will start in East Hampton where you'll be able to park your car and hop on our tour bus or you can self drive. From there, we'll take you to see six singular homes in Hamptons, all designed in the modern style of the 20th century!

Whether you're an architecture buff or just love beautiful spaces you won't want to miss this special cultural experience. You'll get to see inside rare sections of the Hamptons, and learn about the history and design of each structure from our knowledgeable docents.

The VIP ticket includes an additional tour of Onna House, newly refurbished by famed fashion designer, Lisa Perry. The home tour will be from 3:00PM to 4:00PM with an intimate panel discussion commencing from 4:00PM to 5:00PM.

This is an important time to reconsider under-the-radar Hamptons history and advocate for the future of significant modern architecture here before it is lost. It is time to illuminate the impressive range of architects who innovated and influenced the design of the American home here and others whose contributions have yet to be properly documented.

The conversation will moderated by Liz Waytkus, Executive Director of Docomomo US, an organization dedicated to the documentation and conservation of architecture of the modern movement across the country. Perspectives will be presented by: Caroline Rob Zaleski, author of the landmark study- Long Island Modernism 1930-1980,

architect Viola Rouhani of Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects on the relevance of this heritage to new local architecture and Lisa Perry, whose vision of architectural restoration is a prime example of conservation for the community.  The site of the talk is Perry’s Oona House, a stunning 1962 house originally designed by architect Paul Lester Weiner for the legendary pop art collectors Robert + Ethel Scull, now transformed into a center for the presentation of works by women artists.

So mark your calendar and get ready to experience the Hamptons like never before. We can't wait to see you at the Hamptons 20th Century Modern Home Tour 2023!

from the nineteen-sixties through the late eighties, some of america’s most renowned architects, including charles gwathmy, andrew geller, bruce nagel, gordon bunshaft, myron goldfinger, norman jaffe, horace gifford, richard meier, philip johnson and many more, designed astonishing modernist homes built in the east end communities of long island, new york.

today, these iconic residences, stunning examples of the modern beach vernacular, are threatened as property values in the Hamptons and other east end beach towns have skyrocketed. Several have been bought and demolished, and others are on the market and facing a similar fate, even before they have a chance to grow old.

timothy godbold, an interior designer based in southampton, became a hamptons preservationist after learning that so many of these historically relevant modernist houses have been torn down.  godbold is the founder and the director of hamptons 20th century modern,  which is working to bring greater recognition to these homes and their designers, to better honor their place in history, and to secure their legacy.  he shares his knowledge, images, and some inside information about these beautiful homes.

hamptons 20 century modern home tour

the inaugural modern home tour is a carefully curated and exclusive tour featuring five modernist homes with all black exteriors. it is a sampling of the best of the hamptons modern architecture from the mid to late 20th century. this self- guided home tour will take visitors inside a myriad of architectural homes by some of the areas most noted architects. the featured homes, chosen for their architecture, interiors, gardens, iconic features and grounds, epitomize the hamptons and will explore different neighborhoods, features and a variety of architectural styles all with a modernist aesthetic.

the architectural gems featured on the tour will be a Harry Bates home created for jay spectre, originally had a black interior, which was revolutionary for the time. the original sofa is still in the home and the original carpentry has remained untouched. a second harry bates house in east hampton is also a part of the tour, including access to the gardens that feature rare Rhododendrons. also included will be a re-imagined eugene futterman and an andrew geller home that was also re-imagined in black by designer john bjørnen, who will be present as house captain offering insights into his interpretation of the modernization and the decision to create a black exterior. the fifth home is a joe d’urso, a purist of modern design who famously created calvin klein’s new york apartment. he worked on very few homes, this one being that last one in existence.

VIP ticket holders, a sixth home will be on view, the famous preston phillips bridgehampton property.

each home will also be included in a custom-printed program produced by HC&G provided to each guest with photos and a brief description of the home.
